A winter vacation in the Netherlands is the perfect excuse to indulge in some sweet and
savory treats and drinks.

One scrumptious dessert you must try while you’re in the Netherlands is oliebollen. This treat is a deep-fried ball of dough covered in powdered sugar and raisins. They’re normally eaten on New Year’s Eve, but you’ll find people eating oliebollen all winter long.

If you’re looking for a beverage to keep you warm, you’ll have to try advocaat. Now this drink will keep you warm for only one reason: it’s alcoholic. It’s made from eggs, sugar and brandy and a favorite dessert beverage in the Netherlands. Alcoholic dessert beverages are common in the Netherlands, and advocaat is definitely a local favorite.

During your trip, make sure to fill your belly with oliebollen and advocaat!

2. You'll be in a real-life winter wonderland

You won’t be able to escape the cold weather, but you’ll see every inch of the country covered in a blanket of white snow.

Any city is perfect to visit to see snow-dusted architecture and streets lined with twinkly star lights. It’ll feel like you stepped inside a snow globe everywhere you go!

Utrecht, Maastricht, Groningen and Amsterdam are especially beautiful mini winter wonderlands to visit.

3. Ice skating is magical - especially on the canals

One of the best parts about visiting the Netherlands during the winter is the frozen
canals. All of the canals throughout the city of Amsterdam turn into makeshift ice rinks
for anyone who owns some skates!

You’ll be weaving between boats as well as people on this natural ice rink. You can also give yourself a guided tour by skating down the different canals in Amsterdam.

This is no ordinary ice rink, so take advantage of the magical experience of skating on Amsterdam’s canals.

4. It has everything you need for dreamy Valentine's Day getaway

The Netherlands will offer you a Valentine’s Day experience like never before. Ditch the
traditional dinner and a movie and experience an uncommon Valentine’s Day.

First, you and your loved one can stroll through the Flower Market in Amsterdam. You’ll be sure to leave there with arms full of sweet smelling Dutch flowers (or at least a rose or two).

Afterwards, you can enjoy an incredible picnic basket at the castle gardens of De
Kasteelhoeve. And if you really want to go all out, you can take a carriage ride through
the night in Amsterdam. What’s more romantic than a horse drawn carriage in
Amsterdam?

Your Valentine’s Day getaway will feel like the perfect dream, so book your tickets now!

5. Winter markets are impossible to resist

If you thought the treats and drinks would keep you in the Christmas mindset year-round, wait till you see the markets.

The Netherlands goes all out for winter markets; lights, music, vendors—they’ve got it all!

One of the best winter markets to visit is in the city of Maastricht. The city transforms its streets and store windows into old-fashioned winter shops from centuries back.

You’ll be in awe of the gorgeous decorations and incredible winter spirit of the town.

6. The streets are almost tourist-free

Aside from the streets of Amsterdam, you’ll find that the towns and cities are scattered
with locals.

Too many tourists roaming the streets and creating long lines for popular attractions can ruin a trip. No one wants to feel like they’re in a Disney World line while they’re abroad.

You can avoid overcrowded tourist locations and enjoy a relaxing trip by visiting the Netherlands during this time of year. Some of the best cities and towns to visit to avoid a tourist overload are Utrecht, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Leiden and Maastricht.

If you’re looking for the perfect winter getaway, you’ve found the right place. The
Netherlands has all of the ideal winter experiences for any traveler.

Check out some of these awesome locations and sites to see for an amazing winter vacation.
